Respectful & Welcoming
How we speak to one another and the words we use are powerful. We can choose to encourage or discourage with our words. How we speak can help or hurt. And, as your child's teachers, we are committed to modeling and teaching the power of respectful, kind, thoughtful words.
Since spring break we have met with each of the classes from 2nd through 8th grades to talk about our expectations for positive words and attitudes. Teachers report, across the school, the tenor of the classrooms, recesses, and lunches have been more peaceful and pleasant since students learned there are boundaries for language.
Last Thursday, at the weekly staff meeting, the discussion about language revealed our teachers are creating positive, nurturing, and welcoming learning environments for everyone, and that this takes consistent conversations with the students rather than a reactive approach to an unwanted behavior. I am encouraged that our teachers are aware of the need to work with each student within the context of the moment, as well as the greater context of the school, to help them develop strong, resepctful verbal habits.
MITCH is a good place to learn.
